The Erstwhile Smoky Negroni is a novel reimagining of a classic cocktail, the Negroni. The Negroni was first compounded in 1919 at a legendary Florentine bar, then known as the Café Casoni (now named Giacosa Café).
Count Camillo Negroni requested that the bartender, Fosco Scarselli, spike his favorite cocktail, the Americano, by adding gin rather than the normal soda water. The resultant cocktail, named after the Count, was equal portions of Gin, Campari, and Sweet Vermouth, It proved to be a sensation throughout Italy. The Count’s family shortly thereafter founded the Negroni Distilleria in Treviso, where they produced a ready-made version of the drink.
The Erstwhile Smoky Negroni takes the classic bitter-sweet flavor and, we think, improves it with the smoky allure of Erstwhile Espadin. Taking inspiration from the White Negroni, a popular variant, we also replace the sweet vermouth with Tempus Fugit Kina L’Aéro d’Or, and the Campari with Salers Gentiane Apéritif. The added sweetness of the Tempus Fugit Kina L’Aéro d’Or plays beautifully with the smoke from the mezcal, while the Salers Gentiane Apéritif’s more intense bitter component is ideally suited to provide the Negroni’s essential flavor.
